1. The Italian Villa Marker

Inscription.
This beautiful villa stood at the southern corner of Cross Street. It was built for William Ainsworth, the wealthy owner of a huge cotton manufactory called Church Street Mills.

The Villa was one of the largest houses on the square with its own gardens surrounded by a high wall. The Villa gained the nickname 'Pepper Hall' under its second owner James Parker who was originally a Grocer.

In the 1940s it became Winckley House, the County Court Office. It was demolished in 1969.
