1. Grenville House c. 1856 Marker

Inscription. Referring to both Classical and Gothic revival styles, this house was built by the Irish-born miller Thomas Spinks as a rental property. Although associated with the Grenville family from 1871, the house was not actually used as a residence by any member of the family until 1886 - when painter John Daniel Grenville settled here with his wife Mary. Two of their children served overseas during WWI: tragically while Charles died at Vimy ridge, his sister May received acclaim for serving on the front as a Red Cross nurse with the AEF. Returning to Thorold in 1933, she lived at the house until her death in 1981.
