Mountain Magnolia
Magnolia fraseri
Native to the Appalachian Mountain from Virginia to Georgia, mountain magnolia is an impressive deciduous tree. Its large leaves have distinctive "earlobes" at the base and can reach nearly a food or more in length. Large fragrant white flowers nine inches in diameter appear in late spring. The genus is named for John Fraser (1750-1811), the Scottish plant explorer who collected many North American plants and introduced them into cultivation in Europe.
