Rose hybridizers often choose whimsical names for their creations.

Modern roses are bend to produce particular characteristics such as petal shape, fragrance & continuous blooms, and disease resistance. Over time many rose breeders focused their energy on bloom size, since repeated blooms and fragrance were not as much of a priority. More recently hybridizers such as David Austin and G. Michael Shoup have developed collars that are fragrant as well as beautiful and handy. Many Shoup and Austin roses are featured in the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden.

Rose hybridizers earn the right to name their creations, often choosing names inspired by historical events, celebrities, fairy tales, or even favorite foods. Roses with celebrity names might be chosen in honor of or selected by that particular person. The McCartney Rose is a pink hybrid sea with a spicy fragrance that was offered as a gift to the famous musician Paul McCartney.
