1. Dwelling Marker

Inscription. This Dwelling was the first permanent home at White Water Shaker Village, completed in 1832. This Dwelling differs from other Ohio and Kentucky Shaker dwellings. The dining room was in the cellar of this Dwelling, and the Dwelling was built next to the Meeting House, instead of across from the Meeting House. There are eight retiring rooms, or bedrooms, in the Dwelling. Each room would house 4 to 6 individuals. The Shakers were a celibate community. Men and women were separated from each other at all times. Within this Dwelling, the Shaker sisters lived on the north side of the building, and the Shaker brothers lived on the south side. Twin staircases, one for women and one for men, reach from the first floor of the Dwelling all the way to the attic.
