Brethren's Shop. . This small shop was completed in 1830. This building was designated for the Shaker Brethren to work since the Shakers were a celibate community. The Shaker Brethren at the North Family worked here. The Brethren may have made brooms in this building. The Shaker Brethren may have also used this building to package garden seeds to sell. In fact, the Shakers are credited with having been the first to sell garden seeds in small paper packages rather than selling them in bulk, as was typical at the time. The White Water Shakers began placing a variety of seed packets in wooden boxes to sell on consignment in local general stores as far west as Missouri. During the late 1850s, the White Water Shakers earned more than $5,000 from their seed business annually. Prior to the end of White Water's packaged garden seed business in the 1870s, the Shaker Brethren may have crafted the wooden boxes used to hold the seed packets in this building.
