1. The Legg House Marker
Built between 1848 and 1854, the Legg House was constructed during Bloomington's first period of urbanization, when frontier conditions had only recently given way to the dignities of a town. This hall and parlor vernacular home, originally just two rooms, was constructed from hand-pressed bricks, locally quarried limestone, and hand hewn poplar beams. The house initially faced Third Street, which was then the main thoroughfare leading east out of town. At this location IU President William Lowe Bryan (1860-1955) once visited his grandparents and later took meals here when it was the Denton's Boarding House.
The house was sold to Indiana University in 1964 for $15,000. The appearance of the house today, surrounded on all sides by empty lots, was created by demolitions and the construction of the East Third/Atwater/Dunn Street intersection in the 1970's.
