1. Thorowgoods in the Revolution Marker

Inscription.
Three brothers of the Thorowgood family were raised in this house and supported the Patriot cause at great risk, with Lord Dunmore's forces (1775) and Benedict Arnold's British troops (1780-1781) nearby. Revolutionary War Patriots are homeowner John Thorowgood and his brothers Qm Mitchell Thorowgood and Ens. Thomas Scarborough Thorowgood, who served in the local militia under their cousins, Col. John Thorowgood Jr. and Lt. Col. Lemuel Thorowgood. John Jr. and Lemuel were imprisoned by the British, as was their cousin William Thorowgood Jr. Eight people enslaved by Thorowgoods obtained freedom by joining British forces.
