from the Dutch for “Little Sawyer”
Inscription.
In 1831 the village was incorporated under the name “Ulster.” In 1855 the village changed its name to “Saugerties” originating from the Dutch phrase “dezaagertjes” which means “the Little Sawyer,” a reference from Dutchman Barent Cornelis Volge, who operated a sawmill along the stream called Sawyers Mill.

More about this marker. This sculpture is one of 35 works of street art commissioned by the Saugerties Chamber of Commerce for their Barkin’ Around Saugerties display for the 2025 summer season. This is the only one of the 35 pieces that qualifies as a historical marker as it meets all of our criteria: It is outdoors, designed to be withstand the elements for years, and summarizes a bit of local history.
