1. Dacusville Marker, Side One

Inscription. By the 1820s this section of Pickens District was known as Dacusville. Tradition holds the community was named for Archibald Nathaniel Dacus, a native of Virginia who operated a store at the crossing of two former Cherokee paths. It was likely named by John S. Edwards, who opened an inn and stable in the area in 1826. Edwards also established the first Dacusville post office in 1828.

For most of the 1800s Dacusville was also called “Trap” or “The Trap,” an earlier name likely dating to the area’s time as Cherokee territory. Drover traffic and others traveled on the Hamburg Road, which followed what is now known as Cherokee Trail. By the 20th century the Dacusville area included grist mills, stores, cotton gins, as well as other commercial enterprises.
