William Howard Taft rolled down Wilmington's Third Street on the afternoon of Nov. 9, 1909 as 20,000 people cheered him on. The 27th president was in town as part of a tour of the country, to which he had just been elected to lead months earlier. Stretching up Market Street, hundreds of children dressed in red, white and blue assembled to form a living American flag that encompassed the entire road. It is said Taft enjoyed the patriotic sight quite a bit.
