Inscription.  French:

standing. Afterwards, with his wife Matilda of Flanders (1031-1083), he founded the Men's Abbey and the Ladies' Abbey, where their burial ground is located.

The city of Caen thus became a dynastic foundation shortly before William seized the English throne and had Matilda crowned at Westminster in 1068.

The statue erected at the bottom of the castle and halfway between the two abbeys, recalls this part of History that made our city the regular residence of the Anglo-Norman sovereigns between 1066 and 1204. Caen became the link between the lands across the sea, from the English kingdom to the duchy of Aquitaine.
