King of Beasts
The African Lion may be the king of beasts in European folklore, but in Asia the royal animal is the tiger - the greatest of all cats. Mike the Tiger is a Bengal tiger, the royal tiger of the rulers of India.

Asian Domain
Tigers once roamed from Siberia, Korea and China, south to India and Southeast Asia and as far west as the Caspian Sea. They ahve lived in rain forests and grasslands in tropical and colder climates throughout Asia.

Wild Tigers
The range of the tiger was reduced greatly in the 20th century and it may be that soon there will be no wild tiger populations in the world.

There have been eight sub-species of tiger. Bengal, Indochinese, South China, Siberian, Sumatran, Caspain (extinct in last 100 years), Javan (Extinct in last 25 years), Balinese (extinct in last 50 years).

Cool Facts
Tigers are closely related to lions, leopards, and jaguars, but tigers are the largest and heaviest of the large cats.
A healthy tiger usually stays away from people. But in Asia's growing human population, desperate tigers have killed more people than any other large cat on other continents.

Along with jaguas, tigers are the only large cats that frequently enter water to hunt or cool off.
Most male tigers weigh around 400 plus pounds, females may weigh 300 pounds, making them the largest of the large cats. A male of the larger Siberian subspecies may weigh 900 pounds.
Tigers may sleep 20 hours a day.
