Halvorsen made his debut as a violinist in 1882. He studied in Kristiania, Stockholm, Leipzig, Berlin and Liège and began his musical career as a student in Kristiania under Paolo Sperati. Guest conductor with appearances in all the Nordic capitals, St. Petersburg, London and Paris. He began composing while he was a violin teacher at the Helsinki Music Institute in 1891. Conductor of the Harmoniens Orchestra in Bergen 1893-99.
