Inscription.

Fremont and Matilda lived here until the 1915 bankruptcy of Chesbrough Brothers, a lumbering and milling firm started by Fremont's father, Alonzo. Built in the Romanesque Revival style popularized by Henry Hobson Richardson, it was designed by architect Dillon Prosser Clark. Its massive scale capitalizes on a strong horizontal band separating the stone and brick and uniting the porch and turret. The front gable with its prominent Palladian window adds vertical drama anchored by the marble-columned porch. Patterned brick chimneys and acanthus leaf tiles add to the architectural interest. Inside, each room features different woods, including golden oak panels inset with burled walnut, mahogany wainscoting and coffered ceilings, and cherry, all setting off the grand stairway and fireplaces.

Erected by Center Avenue Neighborhood Association.
