Architect Torolf Prydz was a jeweler and owner of the jeweler's firm J. Tostrup when Tostrupgården replaced the two older buildings on the same site. The new monumental building, with a decor influenced by neo-Gothic and neo-Baroque, had load-bearing steel structures, electrical systems and an elevator. It was very modern and something completely new for its time. In addition to the jeweler's, the building had the Grand Kinematograf on the second floor and the Tostrupkjelleren restaurant on the ground floor. The restaurant was visited by politicians, journalists and artists. It was closed in 2005, allegedly as a result of the smoking law. In a poor lodging in Tostrupgården, the writer and Christian bohemian Hans Jæger lived his last years. Jæger's close friend Edvard Munch immortalized his deathbed in the painting Bohemens død (“The Death of a Bohemian”).(Submitted on July 3, 2025.)
