1. Newborough Bar and Borough Gaol Marker
This painting of the Newborough Old Bar is dated 1845 although, according to historians, the Old Bar, with notorious prison and place of confinement known as "the black hole', was demolished in 1843.
The rooms over the archway were used for the imprisonment of debtors, with some spending many years there.
In due course a new gate was built-in Gothic style complete with mock battlements but after only forty seven years it in turn was demolished as an impediment to traffic and never replaced. The Nag's Head sign is legible, later it was re-named Miler's, then the Old Bar and finally the Huntsman before conversion into a shop.
Henry Barlow Carter was christened in Bermondsey, London and brought up in Newington Butts, Surrey. According to Professor Gordon Bell, ships, travel and life at sea clearly caught Carter's imagination from a young age. He moved north after he met his cousin, Eza Solitt and they married at St Mary's Parish Church, Scarborough in 1810.

It is thought he offered tuition from his home at 16 Work Place (marked by a civic society blue plaque) where his pupils included his two sons. Following the death of his wife in 1857, Carter moved to Torquay where he died in 1868.
