Eberhart House

Eberhart House. . , This home, also known as the Eberhart House, at 228 East Pleasant Street (formerly 228 Clark Street) was built in 1903, about the time Adolph Olson Eberhart began his political career. Eberhart, the 17th Governor of Minnesota, was born in Värmland, Sweden in 1870 and came to the United States in 1881. He worked as a farmhand before attending Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota. In 1895, he moved to Mankato, studied law under Judge Lorin Cray and became an attorney. Eberhart also served as vice president for Widell Construction, a quarry company, was director of the First National Bank and became Deputy Clerk for the U.S. District Court in Mankato. In 1898, Eberhart married Adele (Koke) of Mankato, and together the couple had five children. , Eberhart was elected to the State Senate in 1902 and 1904. He was elected Lieutenant Governor in 1906 and 1908. When Governor John Johnson died in 1909, Eberhart became Governor. He served two more terms as Governor having been elected in 1910 and 1912. , Because many of his duties required him to be in St. Paul, Eberhart eventually sold this home in 1913. Subsequent homeowners often shared this large home with boarders, including several Mankato Normal School students and instructors. The house remains a place of residence and is privately owned. , This building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 and locally designated as a Heritage Preservation Landmark in 2013.
