1. East End of the Church Marker
Inscription. This was the holiest part of the abbey. The monks gathered here eight times a day for their services. The footings of their choir stalls can be seen close to where you are standing.

Mass was celebrated daily at the high altar, which has been restored to its original position. The gold and silver shrine of Aelred, abbot between 1147 and 1167, was close to the high altar. The pillars closest to the high altar have cuttings showing the location of the tombs of important people who made gifts of land or money to the abbey Chapels at the east end were used to say masses for people who supported the monastery.
