1. Knaresborough Market Marker
Inscription. First documented in 1206 in the reign of King John, the right to hold a market was officially confirmed by a charter of King Edward I to his favourite, Piers Gaveston, then Lord of Knaresborough, in 1310. This conferred on the town the status of a free borough and fixed Wednesday as market day. The antiquary John Leland noted that the market was 'quik' (lively), when he visited Knaresborough in 1538.
