Inscription. This is the entrance to one of two sallyports built around 1300. This underground tunnel was used for secret entry and exit from the castle.

The tunnel was large enough for a small group of armed men to leave the castle secretly and launch an attack on any besieging troops.

The tunnel is cut out of solid rock. It slopes steeply down into the dry moat or Castle Ditch, where there is an exit.

You can explore the tunnel on a guided tour in the spring/summer season.
