1. Scarborough Castle Marker

Inscription. Scarborough Castle stands on a massive headland of rock which has been inhabited for nearly 3,000 years. Ringed by cliffs and the sea, this naturally defensible site has been fortified many times over the centuries. The harbour at Scarborough has also served as an important gateway to the whole of north-east England.

This introductory display traces the long occupation of the headland. There is also an exhibition on the first floor of the adjacent Master Gunner's House displaying some of the remarkable objects that have been discovered here. These objects vividly illustrate the changing realities of life on the headland during the last 3,000 years. The exhibition can also be viewed as an interactive tour presented on the touch-screen in this display.

Having seen the display and the exhibition you can explore the headland and castle using the guidebook and audio tour. The audio tour connects with a series of panels around the site with reconstruction drawings of the headland at different points in its history.

Scarborough Castle is a former medieval royal fortress situated on a rocky promontory overlooking the North Sea and Scarborough, North Yorkshire, England. The site of the castle, encompassing the Iron Age settlement, Roman signal station, an Anglo-Scandinavian settlement and chapel, the 12th-century enclosure castle and 18th-century battery, is a scheduled monument of national importance.
