1. Gun Batteries Marker
Scarborough coastal trade was occasionally threatened by hostile warships, most famously by the Dutch Admiral De Witt in 1653 and the American privateer John Paul Jones 1779.
The gunpowder stores for the castle's guns were probably in the building next to this display known today as the Master Gunner's House following its conversion into a residence around 1740. The Master Gunner's House was further modernised before 1821.
A new barracks was constructed in 1746 to accommodate the soldiers based here. It was built onto King John's medieval chamber block, and parts of it can still be seen.
During the 17th century the castle also served as a prison. George Fox, the founder of the Quakers, was held here between April 1665 and September 1666. The conditions of his imprisonment in the Cockhyll Tower were dreadful, with rainwater forming pools on his bed.
