1. The Armory Marker
Inscription.
The Armory building is located at the intersection of Patterson Boulevard and Sixth Street on the west boundary of the Oregon Historic District. The building was constructed in 1893 by John Schenk. Its primary purpose was to hold drilling exercises of the Ohio National Guard regiment. However, considering its proximity to Dayton's nineteenth and early twentieth century industrial district, portions of the building were used by industrial tenants from very early on. The early tenants of the Armory included the Borchers Carriage Company (1910s) and the Buyers Paper Company (from about 1918), which used the building as a warehouse. A tobacco company and an elevator manufacturing company joined this list of tenants during the mid-twentieth century.

Left image: The Hoglen Brothers lumberyard (later, the Hauck lumberyard) was located on the site of the Armory, between the Miami Erie Canal and the canal branch. The 1875 lithograph shows the property looking south toward the confluence of the canal branch to the left and the Miami Erie Canal right of the railroad.

Right image: The Armory Building as seen in about 1920.
