1. Leon's Market Building Marker

Inscription. Originally built as a two story four course wide brick structure by Soren L. Petersen circa 1893. The second story was removed in 1964 because of structural concerns.

Building was owned and operated as a general store, complete with groceries, hardware, dry goods, animal feed, gas, kerosene and more by Petersen and later Ed Jespersen as "Jespersen's Mercantile." Purchased in 1950 by Leon J. Sorensen and continued as "Leon's Market" through 2001.

Served as the main train stop in Huntsville during early 1900's and survived a devastating fire in about 1958. The Sorensen family leased the building as a meeting house for a community church from 2001 through 2016. Restored by Richard L. Sorensen family and currently in use as Huntsville Mercantile Events Center and Inn.
