Inscription. On December 29, 1954 an Air Force, C-119 "Flying Boxcar" plane crashed near here killing nine military personnel. The plane was en route from Stewart AFB in Smyrna, Tennessee to Brookley-Donaldson AFB in Mobile. Severe weather, including what, was probably a tornado, struck the plane and tore off the left wing, which then struck the cargo area. Severely damaged, the plane caught fire and began a nosedive. Miraculously two men were able to parachute out of the plane and survived. Wreckage of the plane was scattered over a large area of Grassy Mountain, the Shin Point community, and Paint Rock River.
