The merchant Andreas Tofte, the city's first mayor, built his residence here in 1840-41. Upon his death in 1852, his sons-in-law Stener Rosenberg and Thorvald Meyer took over the property, and five years later Meyer became the sole owner. In 1867 the house burned down and Meyer had the city's most elegant private mansion built.(Submitted on July 8, 2025.)
Upon Meyer's death in 1909, the Christiania Handelstands Forening bought the property and carried out major renovations. In 1972, the city council decided to demolish the house along with the rest of the block, including the characteristic facade facing Karl Johans gate. The plan was to implement architect Hεkon Mjelva's plans to build a high-rise building. The Ministry of the Environment stopped the plan in 1973 on the grounds that the built environment was of national importance. The Selskabet For Oslo Byes Vel (Society for the Civic Good of Oslo) was an active opponent of demolition.
