Inscription. Born Alice Ann Laidlaw on July 10, 1931 in Lower Town Wingham, Ontario. Educated at wingham public and Highschool and the University of Westem, Ontario, Married to James Munro and moved to Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia. Refumed io Ontario in 1972. In 1976 she married Gerald Fremlin and lives in Clinton, Ontario The strength of Ms. Munro’s fiction arises partially from a vivid sense of regional focus. Her book themes have often been the dilemmas of the adolescent girl coming to terms with family and small town More recent work addresses the problems of middle age, women alone and of the elderly.

Looking toward Josephine Street

While not exclusively so, Munro’s stories are mostly set in and drawn from Huron County, Ontario, elaborating its people, its changing culture, its way of life. As Munro once told an interviewer, “I am intoxicated by this particular landscape, at home with the brick houses, the falling down barns, the trailer parks, burdensome old churches …” Or as she wrote of her home place in 1974, having just returned to live again in Ontario after more than twenty years in British Columbia, on Canada’s west coast, “This ordinary place is sufficient, everything here is touchable and mysterious.”
