Simon B. Goodman Memorial Carillon. Dedicated: Sept. 18, 1960. , Simon B. Goodman (1872-1958) , Simon B. Goodman, who was born in Germany in 1872, completed an eighth-grade education and came to the United States at age 16. He learned the tailoring trade and established a well-known business in downtown Wilmington., He married Bessie Isaacs in 1898 and the couple resided in Wilmington for 40 years. Their son, Kennard E., graduated from Wilmington College as a member of the Class of 1921. He played bells in the College Orchestra and was a member of the Spanish Club, Pep staff, The Wilmingtonian staff and he played a principal role in the Annual Play. Following Simon's death in 1958, Bessie purchased the 35 bells and carillon keyboard that were part of the Vatican Pavilion at the 1958 Brussels World Fair and gave it to the College in her husband's memory. WC erected a 60-foot bell tower on the site of the old observatory. The Carillon has been described as an especially ecumenical endeavor, as a Catholic artifact was given in memory of a Jewish man to a Quaker institution., This marker is part of the campus building commemoration project conducted by the Wilmington Yearly Meeting as a special contribution to the College's sesquicentennial celebration.
