1. Japanese Tree Peonies Marker

Inscription. Tree peonies are woody shrubs native to Central and Southern China and Tibet. Seafaring traders introduced them to Japan in the eighth century. The Japanese called tree peonies boutan or botan and admired their large spring flowers, elevating them to similar status as the beloved sakura (cherry blossom). As in China, plantsmen bred many varieties of tree peony over hundreds of years, but the Japanese favored simpler flower forms with fewer petals than the heavy, rounded Chinese varieties.
