1. Woonhuis voogd Erasmus / Home of Erasmus’ Guardian Marker
From the late Middle Ages onward, priests and canons lived in this building. In 1504, it was purchased and occupied by Pieter Winckel, curate of St. John's Church and an important citizen of Gouda. He became known as the teacher of the young Erasmus at the Parish School on the Market Square. After the death of Erasmus's parents, he was appointed guardian. He ensured that Erasmus entered the Emmaus Monastery in Steyn, just outside Gouda. This house keeps the memory of Erasmus alive.

Winckel was a schoolmaster at the Grote School in Gouda. He was also the first teacher of the young Erasmus. After Erasmus's parents died in 1484, Winckel became one of his guardians. Although Erasmus wanted to study at the university, Winckel sent him to the monastery.(Submitted on July 10, 2025.)
The oldest surviving letter from Erasmus, from late 1484, is addressed to Winckel. He also wrote a letter to the fictitious apostolic secretary Lambertus Grunnius, in which he complained about his forced entry into the monastery and the poor management of the inheritance by his guardians.
In 1504, Winckel purchased the property at Blauwstraat 16-19 in Gouda.
