1. Sgt. Charles Cadreau, U.S. Army Marker
On 13 June 1944, Company "K", 38th Infantry, moving south in the vicinity of le Boise d'Elle, France, was stopped by heavy mortar and artillery fire, which was followed by a subsequent counter attack around their left flank, Sergeant Cadreau placed a machine gun into position, and continued to fire upon the enemy through a mortar and smoke barrage after his company had withdrew. Only after his ammunition supply was exhausted did he withdraw. By exhibiting total disregard for personal safety, he was materially instrumental in stopping the enemy counter thrust and enabled his company to regain its position.
