The gatehouse was built as part of the New Croton Aqueduct water system and designed by Frederick S. Cook in the Romanesque Revival style. The gatehouse was constructed to regulate the amount of water flowing from the underground masonry aqueduct to pipes leading to the reservoir in Central Park and to localities in Manhattan.
In 1981, the building was designated a New York City landmark; two years later it was added to the National Register of Historic Places, under the jurisdiction of the Department of Cultural Affairs, the property has been transformed by Ohlhausen Dubois Architects, working with Wank Adams Slavin Associates, into a state-of-the-art theater for Harlem Stage/Aaron Davis Hall, Inc.
