Inscription. Water was an essential part of daily worship for the monks. Holy water, which was blessed by leaders of the community, was used for ritual cleansing of the body, soul, and vessels used in worship. Special basins held holy water in the church. Water was also piped to the ornate basins here in the cloister for handwashing, shaving, and the ritual washing of feet.

The Rye Valley's beautiful landscapes and abundant wildlife make it a powerful place to connect with the natural world. Protecting and restoring native habitats that animals can move through freely helps them to thrive, and creates a landscape where we can boost our wellbeing through nature walks and wildlife watching.
