1. The Chapter House Marker
Inscription. After the church, the chapter house was the most important building in the Abbey.

The Cistercian monks met here every morning to listen to a chapter from the monastic rule written by St Benedict, to hear confessions, and to receive punishment for any sins they had committed. Important decisions were taken here such as who the successor would be if the abbot died or was deposed for wrongdoing.

It is clear from the differences in architectural style and decoration that the extension to the east was rebuilt, perhaps because the first structure had collapsed. During the rebuild coffins were inserted in the side walls. It is not clear whether there were bodies inside or whether the coffins were put there to make the building more stable.
