Mapleton Township in West Fargo in Cass County, North Dakota — The American Midwest (Upper Plains)
Embden Depot
In 1883, Enos Gray built the first Embden Post Office. Gray was an early Cass County settler who homesteaded near Gill Township in 1879. He named it after his hometown of Embden, Maine, where he was born in 1829. In 1891, the original Embden Post Office closed. Eight years later, construction on the new spur line between Casselton and Marion began. With this new transportation line opening, it appeared growth was possible in the area. William F. Krueger purchased a section of land from the Northern Pacific Railway not far from the old Embden Post Office and plotted it into lots and streets. This plat of land became the reconstituted town of Embden. The depot operated from 1900 until the late 1960s. The Burlington-Northern Railroad Company, now the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company, later phased out the depot and donated it to Bonanzaville in 1970.
