Tremonton Methodist Church

Tremonton Methodist Church. Tremonton Historic District. The Methodists held their first church services in this area at the Union School in 1899, four years before Tremont (later Tremonton) was founded. In 1904, the congregation began meeting in the newly constructed Odd Fellows Hall. They purchased a building lot in 1903, but would not have their own building until 1905. This was made possible by an opportunity to buy an existing Methodist Church building that was located in Cannon, Cache County. The Victorian-style church, built in 1892, had been abandoned, but was in good condition. Tremonton settlers carefully deconstructed the building and, over a period of three days, and with the help of some Cache Valley settlers, moved the church. Reverend Gilpin, then pastor of the Methodist congregation completed much of the rebuilding of the church himself. , , Although the congregation started meeting in the new building in 1905, it was not officially dedicated until December 1906, by Bishop David M. Moore. A parsonage was constructed in 1914. The stained glass windows were added during the 1930s. In 1938, a major renovation was made to the building when a basement with raised concrete foundation was added underneath. This provided some much-needed space in the building. However, a new Methodist Church was later constructed in Brigham City, where the minister for both congregations lived. Without a full-time minister in Tremonton, membership waned; the parsonage was eventually sold and moved in 1968; and the Church was finally closed in 1989. The building was leased to other congregations for a number of years before being sold to West Liberty Foods for use as an employee daycare center.
