1. Erasmus: Sint Jan Marker
In 1552 werd de St. Janskerk door de bliksem getroffen en door een grote brand verwoest. In de jaren daarna werd de kerk herbouwd en kreeg het de wereld-beroemde glas-in-loodramen, die onder andere werden ontworpen door glazeniers Dirck en Wouter Crabeth.
De glazen laten voorstellingen zien uit het Nieuwe Testament. Ze weerspiegelen de wens van Erasmus en andere kerk-hervormers uit die tijd om de Bijbel voor iedereen toegankelijk te maken. Geen Middeleeuwse interpretaties, maar heldere verhalen. Deze nieuwe koers werd niet meteen door iedereen gewaardeerd, maar kreeg uiteindelijk de zegen van Koning Filips II.

The windows show scenes from the New Testament. They reflect Erasmus' and other reformers' wish to make the Bible accessible to everyone. Instead of medieval interpretations of the Book, they argued for plain stories that everybody could understand. This new vision wasn't welcomed by all at first, but eventually got the blessing of King Philip II.
