1. Reuse and Recycle Marker

Inscription. Water was collected from the roofs and stored in tanks or cisterns, ensuring a supply of water even during the driest periods. Lightly-used water was recycled for washing, laundry and industry. Aelred, abbot of Rievaulx in the 12th century, reportedly built and used a small cold water bathing tank for his spiritual and physical health.

Collecting and reusing water is key to good land management. Water-friendly farming techniques include creating leaky dams to slow water flow, and flood storage areas. As well as providing farmers with a useful supply of water, these measures help rivers and streams to thrive.
