1. Chapter House Marker
The building dates to the time of Aelred, who was abbot from 1147 and 1167. It has an unusual plan, including a rounded, or apsidal end, which is surrounded by a passageway. This design was inspired by churches commemorating early Christian martyrs in Rome and was intended to emphasize the sanctity of William, Rievaulx's first abbot, who was buried here. The graves of several other abbots can still be seen. In 1250, William's remains were moved to an imposing shrine at the entrance to the chapter house. (Marker Number 8.)
