Inscription. This building is dedicated to Albert Bajorek, a 49-year-old coal miner who was tragically killed on November 17, 1940 in the Gano Mine in Vienna Township. Bajorek was in the mine shaft at the 114-foot level when a two-way lift cage descended and crushed him. His wife, Mary, eight children and three grandchildren survived him.

In Memory of Albert Bajorek September 9, 1891 November 17, 1940

On Sunday, November 17, 1940 tragedy struck at the Gano Coal Mine in Vienna Township. Forty-nine year old Albert Bajorek a coal miner from Buffalo Ohio, was installing a pump deep in the mine shaft. Albert was at the 114 foot level when the two-way lift cage descended crushing him to death. The photo below shows the Gano Coal Mine after the accident in 1941. The mine has since been filled in and is marked with a concrete and steel bollard marking its former location.
