What Happened Here…
This building is unusual amongst English towers because its entrance chamber has no natural light. Guards would not have slept in a pitch-black room and it was probably used as a reception and for storage. The basement below has a beautifully domed ceiling and could have been used as a treasury, being the most secure space in the castle. The well was a source of fresh water and might have been vital if the castle was besieged.

Meet the Steward
The steward (also called seneschal) was an important servant, who came from a good family. He managed the lord's household offices and departments, such as the stores, kitchens, chandlery and wood-house.

Otes de Tilly served as the chief steward at Conisbrough from 1174 to 1178. He married into an important local family of William son of Raven (Sheriff of Wakefield) and together with his wife Mabel lived in the nearby manor of Hatfield.
