Inscription.

The history of education in Clintonville is intertwined with this site. A two-room schoolhouse, built in 1873 on this land donated by the town’s namesake, Urial P. Clinton, was the town’s first building constructed solely for the purpose of education. In 1918, Clintonville built its first structure intended to be used only as a high school. The firm of Parkinson & Dockendorff designed the school with as much flexibility as possible in the knowledge that additions would inevitably be made. These included the 1951 Rexford School Building and the 1966 Connecting Addition. As of 2023, this site serves as the Rexford-Longfellow Elementary School. The evolution of this site represents changes in educational philosophy and school architecture over time, as well as the need to grow facilities as rural schools consolidated.
