Central Township in Perryville in Perry County, Missouri — The American Midwest (Upper Plains)
Cashion-Ziegler-Greenwell Building
In 1915, John Ziegler owned this building and it was known by the locals as the Ziegler Building. An opera house and theater continued in operation on the second floor. A fire threatened to demolish the building at one point, but the Perryville Fire Company quickly extinguished the blaze with only minor damage. By 1927, the place became known as the James T. Greenwell Building. It was remodeled by Greenwell to become a modern hotel, with the addition of another story with a flat, fireproof roof. The first floor contained a lobby, kitchen, and sample rooms and a new store front was added. The second and third floors contained a total of 28 rooms, six with a private bath. From the 1940's to the 1960's, Sutterer Sales and Service sold appliances on the first floor.
The Southeast Missouri Council of Governments purchased this building in 1981. The council has leased the property to the Southeast Missouri Regional Planning Commission since that time.
