Inscription.
James was born in a cabin in the wilderness on November 19, 1831. The cabin was 20 by 30 feet and made of unhewn logs, notched and laid one upon another, in cob house style. The height was 12 feet or more in the front and six feet or more on the backside. The spaces between the logs were filled with clay or mud, making a warm home in the winter and a cool one for summer. Scan QR code to watch the 1931 dedication of this site.

Eliza continued living in the small cabin until about 1845 when a new frame house was built just west of this site along a spring. The fate of the old cabin is unknown but in 1920 remnants of Abram’s apple trees could still be seen on the property.
