1. The Orchard Marker
Inscription.
As soon as he had a sufficient clearing, Abram planted a field of wheat, currant bushes, and a fine orchard of apple, cherry, and plum trees. On May 7, 1833 a forest fire swept through these woods threatening the Garfield Farm. Abram and Eliza fought the fire to save their home, however, Abram died the following day.

On his deathbed, he said to Eliza, “I have planted four saplings in these woods and I leave them to your care.” Abram and Eliza are buried at Roselawn Cemetery in Solon, Ohio. This image shows the remnants of Abram Garfield’s orchard that could still be seen near his birthsite in 1920.
