Inscription. Born on farm in Van Meter, Iowa, 17 year old righthander burst on 1936 Major League scene with 15 strikeouts for Cleveland in very first pro start against St. Louis.

Still in first season, set A.L. record fanning 17 Philadelphia A’s. In 1938, got 18 Tigers to set M.L. record that stood for 31 years. 1st pitcher to win over 20 before age of 21, with 24 in 1939.

Enlisted in the Navy, Dec. 9, 1941, spent 4 years, gained 8 Battle Stars on U.S.S. Alabama. Pitched for the Navy in Norfolk before returning to Indians in late 1945.

Fast ball clocked over 100 M.P.H., led A.L. in strikeouts 1938-1941 and 1946-48 setting M.L. record in 1946 with 348. Won 20 or more 6 times, pitched 3 no-hitters and 12 one-hitters among 266 wins.

All Star Game 8 times, World Series twice, Sporting News Player of Year (1940) and top pitcher (1951), elected to Hall of Fame on first ballot in 1962.
