Led 1954 Eastern League in 5 categories with Birmingham. Made NY debut at age 19 after .296 mark at Denver in 1955. .328 average with 52 extra base hits in 1956 at Denver earned him regular Yankee spot through 1965.
Named to Sporting News A.L. All Star Team 5 straight years (1961-1965) winning gold gloves each year. Runner-up to Mickey Mantle for A.L. MVP in 1962, led league with 209 hits, tied A.L. mark by leading in ABs 3 straight years (1962-64).
Named to 7 All Star games and played in 7 World Series. Remains only player named MVP from losing team (1960). At time of induction still held Series records for hits (13), rbi (12) and runs (8) in a series, rbi in a game (6), as well as hits in a 5 games series (9).
After retirement at age 31, long time successful baseball coach at University of South Carolina, finishing 2nd in 1975 College World Series with a 51-6 record.
Member of South Carolina Hall of Fame, has served as President of Baseball Chapel, remains active in fellowship of Christian Athletes and has accumulated scores of awards for community and humanitarian service.

The Tidewater Baseball Shrine recognizes players and executives who have significantly contributed to the game of baseball in the Tidewater area of Virginia. The shrine is located at Harbor Park, which is home to the Norfolk Tides, a AAA minor league baseball team affiliated with the Baltimore Orioles.
