An outfielder- first baseman, served in U.S. Army (1953-54) and after .289, 21 Hr and 98 RBI season in Denver (1955), made major league debut after 1956 trade to Washington. Also played in K.C., Baltimore and Detroit in 8 year M.L. Career. Was in outfield for Ted Williams last HR and Roger Maris#60. Only player to hit in all Cuban triple play.
Scouted and coached for K.C. (1964-1965). Joined Mets as 3b coach (1966) before becoming Director of Player Development (1967-72). His baseball acumen largely responsible for Tides early success in winning 1969 Pennant, 1972 Governors with 4 play - off appearances in 4 years (1969-72).
Managed Texas (1973) before winning 3 division crowns with 2 2nds in 5 seasons (1975-79) with Royals. Interim manager of Cardinals, then named General Manager in 1980. Returned to field and won 3 N.L. Pennants and a World Series before 1990 resignation. Retired as Senior Vice President, Player Personnel for California Angels (1991-94).
Record of 1,281 - 1,125 ranks 25th all time. Awards included UPI, Sporting News and Baseball Writers Manager of the Year 1976, 1982 and 1985, Executive of the Year 1981 and 1982, and Sports Illustrated Manager of the Decade for 1980s.

The shrine is located at Harbor Park, which is home to the Norfolk Tides, a AAA minor league baseball team affiliated with the Baltimore Orioles.
