1. Richard (Bullet) Alexander Marker
Inscription. Born and raised in Portsmouth, VA, played baseball, basketball and football (second string All State) at Wilson High. After year at University of Richmond, signed as catcher by Boston Red Sox and played at Roanoke Rapids and Newbern in Coastal Plains League 1949-51.

Joined Portsmouth Fire Department (1951), and served in U.S. Army (1951-53). Retired after 33 years as Captain in Fire Department in 1983. Began a secondary career as collegiate and high school umpire in 1966 that led him to the top of that profession.

Umpired Virginia High School Class A AA and AAA Championships for 33 years and worked every level of NCAA Regional Final Tournaments at Austin, TX (1983) and Tallahassee, FL (1984).

His ability brought him into international play involving teams from Cuba, Korea, Chinese Taipei and ultimately to the International Cup games in Puerto Rico (1989) and the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.

Served as full time alternate in the International League (1982-91) and started umpire school (1983) that has helped increase competency for hundreds. Although retired from active umpiring after 1997 season, he continued to offer his expertise to others and has received countless awards including Virginia Sports Hall of Fame Special Citation, Bud Metheny Award, Hollis Drake Award and election to
